Wrecks: history and mystery

Diver with arms outstretched above a shipwreck

Not far from the coast of Playa del Carmen, a few wrecks rest quietly, providing a home for many forms of marine life. Over time, they have become artificial reefs and are now among the most visited sites in the Riviera Maya.

These sites are perfect for adventurers who want to combine history and underwater exploration. Exploring a wreck lets you see an extraordinary landscape and better understand how man-made objects end up becoming part of the natural marine cycle.

Here are the 2 most popular wrecks in the Yucatán region:

1. Mama Viña (Playa del Carmen) 🚢

Divers along the Mama Viña wreck

The Mama Viña wreck is a former shrimp boat that was deliberately sunk in 1995 to create an artificial reef. Today, it’s one of the most popular dive sites in Playa del Carmen.

Lying at a depth of about 30 meters (100 feet), the wreck is covered in coral and sponges, attracting varied marine life, including barracudas, groupers, rays and, occasionally, nurse sharks.

With its sometimes strong currents, this site offers a lively dive that advanced divers particularly enjoy.

2. C-53 Felipe Xicoténcatl (Cozumel) ⚓

Originally built in Tampa by Wilson Marine Shipworks in 1944, this ship, 184 feet long, 33 feet wide and 40 feet high (from the keel to the top of the superstructure), was commissioned into the U.S. Navy as a minesweeper named SCUFFLES.

In 1962, it was sold to the Mexican Navy, converted into an Admiral-class patrol vessel and renamed FELIPE XICOTÉNCATL C-53. From 1962 to 1999, it patrolled the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Caribbean, taking part in rescue missions and in the fight against illegal arms and drug trafficking.

After 55 years of service, the C-53 was decommissioned and later donated to the Cozumel underwater park. It was sunk in 1999 at a depth of 25 meters (82 feet), just off Chankanaab Park.

Today, this wreck covered in coral and sponges is home to diverse marine life, making it a captivating dive for underwater explorers.
