The C-56 wreck, also known as “Juan Escutia,” is an iconic shipwreck off Puerto Morelos, intentionally sunk in 2000 to create an artificial reef about 8 km offshore, between Cancún and Playa del Carmen.
Lying on the seabed at around 27–30 m (89–98 ft), this wreck is best suited for Advanced divers (Level 2 or equivalent). It attracts both divers and large schools of spotted eagle rays, making it an incredible dive site.

The Story Behind the C-56 Wreck in Puerto Morelos
Launched by the American Ship Building Company on March 13, 1943, the C-56 was a World War II minesweeper (formerly the USS Knave AM-256).
After serving in the Atlantic, mainly on patrol and convoy escort missions between the U.S. East Coast and the western Atlantic approaches until May 1945, it was eventually decommissioned and placed in reserve.
October 1962 marked a new chapter: it was sold to the Mexican Navy and renamed ARM Cadete Juan Escutia C-56. Eventually, it was intentionally sunk on October 28, 2000, at around 27 m (89 ft) deep, to become a new attraction in Puerto Morelos.

At 27 m (89 ft) deep, the C-56 wreck sits upright on the sandy bottom. The most striking thing is how alive the ship feels, covered in corals, sponges, and marine organisms that have settled on it over time.
But the most impressive sight is the groups of spotted eagle rays gliding by so close!!
You’ll also spot moray eels if you look closely into the openings and corners. They love hiding in those spots.
It has even happened, just once, that dolphins were seen there!!

The best season for diving in Puerto Morelos runs from December to May, which is known as the dry season.
The sea is often calmer, with temperatures ranging from 26°C to 30°C (79°F to 86°F), and visibility is excellent. You can usually see 15 to 30 m (49 to 98 ft), depending on weather conditions.
