In this article, discover everything you need to know about this fascinating wreck.

The History Behind the Mama Viña Shipwreck in Playa del Carmen
The Mama Viña was a former steel-hulled shrimp trawler that operated for several years off the Mexican Caribbean coast. As a commercial fishing vessel, it navigated the waters of Quintana Roo before suffering significant damage after running aground during a hurricane.

Why Dive the Mama Viña Wreck in Playa del Carmen ?
Diving on a wreck offers a unique sensation that few other dive sites can match, and the Mama Viña wreck is a perfect example.
Since its intentional sinking, the transformation of the Mama Viña has been spectacular. Over the past three decades, corals, sponges, gorgonians, and black coral have gradually covered the entire structure, turning the trawler into a true living reef.

Its cabins and interior decks are now home to permanent schools of silvery fish (glassy sweepers), while green moray eels, barracudas, lobsters, and turtles have settled around the wreck.
In the surrounding waters, it is also common to spot stingrays, spotted eagle rays, and garden eels in the sand.
