Cenote Maravilla: Everything You Need to Know

Cenote Maravilla is one of the most spectacular along the Ruta de los Cenotes, near Puerto Morelos, in the heart of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Reserved for advanced divers, this cenote reveals impressive limestone formations, such as its bell-shaped stalactites, as well as a rare natural phenomenon: a thick layer of hydrogen sulfide that transforms the dive into a true visual spectacle.

Diving in Maravilla offers a unique mix of mystery, adventure, and raw beauty, making it an unmissable stop for enthusiasts in search of extraordinary experiences.

Why is Cenote Maravilla so popular among divers ?

Cenote Maravilla is one of the most spectacular dive sites in the Riviera Maya. Its crystal-clear waters often provide visibility of more than 50m, revealing an impressive natural setting with vast walls and bell-shaped stalactites.

A large opening in the ceiling lets sunlight stream through, creating unique blue-green light effects that turn the dive into a true spectacle.

With its depth of 60m and diameter of more than 90m, Maravilla especially attracts advanced divers in search of thrills.

Its most fascinating feature is the presence of a layer of hydrogen sulfide, which visually separates the clear water from the denser water and creates rare effects during a dive.

What certifications are required to dive in Cenote Maravilla ?

Cenote Maravilla is not accessible to all divers. To dive there, you need at least an advanced-level certification, such as PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, CMAS Level 2, or any other recognized equivalent.

This requirement is explained by the layer of hydrogen sulfide, which visually separates the clear water from the denser water and creates rare effects during the dive.

What is the best time to dive in Cenote Maravilla ?

Diving in Maravilla is a memorable experience, but it is in summer, when the sun is high in the sky, that this cenote reveals its full splendor.

At this time of year, the sun is perfectly aligned above the opening of the cenote, allowing a vertical and ultra-intense beam of light to reach all the way to the bottom, just like in Cenote The Pit.

Where is Cenote Maravilla located and how can you get there ?

Cenote Maravilla is located about 35km from Playa del Carmen. By car, the trip takes around 30 to 40min along Federal Highway 307 toward Puerto Morelos, then turning west onto the Ruta de los Cenotes, where the cenote is located.

The cenote is located on private land. Access is therefore generally by reservation or with the owner’s permission.
