What budget should you plan for 15 days in Mexico ?

A 15 day trip to Mexico can cost very little or quite a lot. It all depends on your travel style, the season, and how much importance you give to diving.

Between flights from Europe, accommodation, meals, local transportation, and activities, the budget can easily vary from one to three.

On average, you should expect around €1,100 to €1,800 per person for a budget trip, €1,800 to €3,500 for a comfortable budget, and €3,800 to €7,000 or more for a high end stay.

Flight prices from France

The round trip flight from France is likely to take up a large part of your budget. Prices vary mainly depending on the season, the arrival city, either Cancún or Mexico City, and how far in advance you book.

You can find round trip fares around €700 to €1,000, but for a realistic budget, it is better to plan for a wider range. Comparison tools like Google Flights also regularly show cheaper flights depending on the dates and ticket conditions.

The most expensive periods often match school holidays, the end of year celebrations, and the busiest weeks on the Caribbean side.

On the other hand, traveling outside the main tourist peaks often allows you to significantly reduce the price of the ticket.

Accommodation for 15 nights

Now, let’s talk about accommodation. Depending on your comfort level, the cost can vary a lot.

If we take a city like Playa del Carmen, which is in my opinion the best city for scuba diving, the closer you get to the beach, the higher the nightly rate will be.

The easiest way to save money is to book early in beach areas, stay a little away from the most sought after neighborhoods, and keep the nicest places for just a few nights instead of the whole trip.

On a 15 day itinerary, that is often what allows you to keep a good level of comfort without blowing the budget.

For 15 nights, you can use these benchmarks:

Hostel or simple room: €15 to €30 per night

Mid range hotel: €50 to €120 per night

Nice hotel or resort: €150 to €400 or more per night

Activities in Mexico

In Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya, it is easy to mix simple activities with more memorable outings. You can enjoy low cost options like the beaches, walks around town, markets, or a few accessible cenotes, but the region is especially known for diving.

The real experience to plan for here is diving in the sea and in cenotes. In the sea, you can explore the reefs around Playa del Carmen or head to Cozumel.

In cenotes, the experience is even more unique, with crystal clear water, light effects, and an atmosphere very different from a classic dive. It is clearly one of the most memorable activities in the Riviera Maya.

Meals and drinks

Mexico lets you eat very well without necessarily planning a big budget, especially if you focus on street food, markets, and local restaurants.

On the other hand, in very touristy areas like Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen, prices rise quickly, especially for trendy restaurants, cocktails, and beachfront spots.

It all depends on how many people you are. On average, you can plan a small budget of €12 to €20 per day, a comfort budget of €25 to €45 per day, and a luxury budget of €60 per day or more.

To eat well without blowing your budget, the most effective approach is to mix small local restaurants for lunch with a few good places in the evening, while avoiding having all your meals in the most touristy areas.

Transportation on site

For long distances, ADO buses remain the simplest and most economical option, especially between Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

On site, colectivos are very practical for short trips, while taxis and ride hailing services offer more comfort at a slightly higher cost.

In Playa del Carmen, a ride with InDrive costs around 80 pesos to go almost anywhere in the city, which makes it a very practical everyday option.

Renting a car can also be useful for exploring the surrounding area freely, but you need to remember to add the cost of fuel, tolls, and the deposit.

Insurance, health, and internet

Even though this is not the most visible part of the budget, it is better to plan a small allowance for travel insurance, internet access, and minor health expenses.

For internet, a local SIM card or an eSIM through apps like Airalo remains the most practical solution to avoid roaming fees.

Finally, remember to keep a small margin for everyday health expenses such as pharmacy items, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, or basic medication. Over 15 days, setting aside a small budget for unexpected expenses is always a good idea.

Summary

For 15 days in Playa del Carmen, the budget can vary a lot depending on the level of comfort, the season, and the number of dives planned.

The flight from France often represents a large part of the budget, followed by accommodation, meals, local transportation, and activities. Playa del Carmen allows for fairly budget friendly travel if you eat local, use ADO buses or colectivos, and avoid the most touristy areas for all your meals.

On average, you should expect around €1,100 to €1,800 per person for a budget trip, €1,800 to €3,500 for a comfortable budget, and €3,800 to €7,000 or more for a high end stay.
